Friends of the Scanner Scum

No Scanner Scum Web site would be complete if it did not mention the man who gave this somewhat notorious group of radio hobby wild men its name. Professor Harold N. Cones Ph.D., better known in radio hobby circles as Dr. DX. Doc is not only known for his DXpertise, he is also co-author (with John H. Bryant) of a number of books on the radio hobby. Among these titles is a favorite of many of the Scum, The Zenith Trans-Oceanic - The Royalty of Radios.
Janice Laws (now Janice Karlock) has been a close friend of the Scanner Scum since before we became known as the Scanner Scum. Along with her husband Steve, she presides over the program International Radio Report on CKUT 90.3 FM  in Montreal. The show airs every Sunday at 10:30 AM ET.

If one were to know these things. . . The pirate radio broadcasts of The Voice of Pancho Villa, heard at Midnight on the last evening of the Kulpsville SWL Fest, have always been favorites of the Scanner Scum. Another close friend of the Scum, Big Steve, posts an archive of these annual challenges to the F.C.C.'s authority. But there is nothing quite like hearing them when they are first broadcast.

Speaking of Big Steve, The Scanner Scum bows to his superior knowledge of audio engineering. Steve has long been both a close friend and a potential source of bail money for the Scum. Steve's productions of Doo Wopp and Oldies are some of the best on (and off) the Internet. Give them a listen.

Rosie Rumpe's Regal Dumpe  was originally located in the Sandbridge, Virginia area. (A much favored gathering spot for The Scum in year's past.) It later moved further South to Williamsburg. Disguised as a Bowling Team from New Jersey, The Scanner Scum made several forays to Rosie's, winning special recognition from King Henry himself. Several Wenches' Spoons (also known as Bangers) are on permanent display in the Scanner Scum Museum. Alas, all good things must come to an end and Rosie's Regal Dumpe is no more. But whenever the Scum gather together, they don their purple bowling shirts and shout "All Hail!!! More Ale!!! in honor of Rosie Rumpe's Regal Dumpe"

Nobody has worked harder over the years to "Keep the Faith" in the shortwave radio hobby than Sheldon Harvey. Sheldon is one of our "Northern Relatives", arriving at Kulpsville from Quebec, Canada every year with radio goodies and great stories. Sheldon is on the Board of Director's of the Canadian International DX Club (CIDX). Uncle Skip negelected to mention CIDX in his book and he has been hearing about it ever since! Sheldon is also the Managing Editor of the CIDX Messenger. As if that wasn't enough to do for the hobby, Sheldon publishes The Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter, an entertaining bit of radio hobby fun. He tries to support all this stuff through his Radio H.F. Shortwave business. A great place to purchase shortwave books and equipment no matter what the exchange rate is these days.
